ToneFreq's Daily Pedal: Emma Effects, TWA Triskelion Harmonic Energizer & Maxon Super Metal and more

Premier Guitar's Jordan Wagner is On Location in Anaheim, CA, for the NAMM 2010 Show where he visits the Godlyke Distribution booth. In this segment, we get to see and hear new products from Emma Effects, TWA and Maxon.

This years from Emma Effects, we get introduced to the StinkBug, ReezaFRATzitz and PsidiYAUwot. The StinkBug is a classic overdrive. The low and high controls gives a great control of the amount of mids in the pedal. Turn them both down, and the midrange comes out, but without being nasal. Turn them up, and the mids gets slightly scooped, still keeping the sound full and punchy. The PsidiYAUwot is Emma's take on a metal pedal.

The TWA Triskelion is a harmonic energizer that uses vintage Synth technology to re-shape the harmonic structure of the input signal, adding punch, clarity and depth to any guitar tone. The TK-1s specially tuned filter can create glassy clean tones, boost midrange for throaty solos, or tune your rig to the room for a wall of singing, resonant feedback. Massive amp sounds, explosive lead-breaks, infinite sustain, and downright nasty, energy-intense tones are just a few of the uses for the Triskelion.

The Maxon Super Tube Pro is Maxon's salute to the rare and highly collectible "Super Tube Screamer" from the 1980's, the new Maxon ST-9 Pro+ Super Tube takes the basic design elements of that coveted vintage model and brings them into the 21st century. Loosely based on Maxons classic 808 circuit, the ST-9 Pro+ offers a dedicated midrange control that varies the amount of Midrange boost, creating powerful, fat and heavy distortion sounds akin to a full stack amplifier. A mode switch to select from two different diode types allows the user to fine-tune the ST-9 Pro+ for use with single coils or humbuckers, while switchable 9- or 18-volt operation provides increased dynamic headroom and fuller frequency response.

The Maxon Super Metal is based on the cult-classic Super Metal pedal from the 1980's, the new Maxon SM-9 Pro+ packs sufficient firepower to accurately reproduce all the tonal evolutions of metal music over the past 30 years. The SM-9 Pro+ features Gain, Level, Scoop, and Edge controls. Gain simultaneously boosts the 1 kHz midrange band by up to 20 dB as Gain is increased. Scoop is a mid-band elimination filter that is variable between 200 Hz 2 kHz. Edge is a hi-cut shelving filter that cuts hi frequencies from 2 kHz to 15 kHz. The SM-9 Pro+ also features switchable 9 or 18 volt operation, providing sufficient heardroom with minimal compression to handle today's high-output pickups and active electronics.

ToneFreq's Daily Pedal: ZVex Inventobox

Zachary Vex of Z. Vex shows Sound Pure all about the Inventobox Pedal in this in-depth overview video. Get your order in with us now! He shows-off this brilliant design which allows an open-ended framework for combining his own pedals into the box, as well as completely new pedal and circuit designs, in a very user friendly way. It is the new "open-source" concept of Guitar and Bass Effect Pedal design, and for certain is the first of its kind ever to hit the street. He explains that a selling price of $399 gets you the Inventobox kit that contains a pedal with a blank circuit board, all of the wires and tools and spare parts to get going, as well as a complete set of modules that reproduce three of his famous signature ZVex tones, including the Fuzz Factory, Super Hard-On, and his take on the Marshall tone stack, with Bass, Mid, and Treble tone controls. For only $299 you get the blank kit, with the tools, wires, and spare parts, but none of the circuits. It's a brilliant and unique concept that is certain to shake things up in the pedal world.

ToneFreq's Daily Pedal: ISP Decimator Noise Reduction Review

The Decimator guitar pedal offers a new approach to Noise Reduction processing with a high level of performance. Most noise suppression systems suffer from one major problem inherent in their design: The system cannot be immediately responsive to very short-term staccato notes. The typical downward expander sound reduction system suffers from a dead zone in the release response characteristic that causes a compromise in tracking both fast decaying notes and long sustained notes. The Decimator pedal's design offers a novel approach to tracking the envelope of the input signal called Time Vector Processing.

Due to this novel approach in controlling the expander, the Decimator system will instantly respond to short staccato notes and, at the same time, will provide a very slow ripple free control of long sustained notes. The Decimator noise suppression system is very transparent delivering high performance.

The Decimator pedal by ISP Technologies is extremely easy to use; simply insert the Decimator at the end of your chain of existing pedals or, insert the Decimator Pedal in the effects loop of your amplifier to clean up the noise present at the amplifier input as well as the noise in the amplifiers pre-amp section. Packaged in a rugged, beautifully polished smooth chrome chassis, the Decimator pedal offers reliability, performance and beauty in one compact pedal.

I have always been a fan of HUSH technology and was excited to find out that the original inventors improved upon it by making the Decimator. Out of all my pedals I’ve used over the past seven years I have never once thought of selling it. Because I play with a lot of gain this has become a mainstay in my rig. It has also taken plenty of abuse going around the world and being dropped more times than I can count. It is a solid performer and keeps unwanted noise at bay. Cheers to ISP for putting together such a great no-nonsense pedal.

LIST PRICE: $150 USD

ToneFreq's Daily Pedal: Malekko Chicklet Reverb

The Malekko Chicklet is an all new, original design, reverb pedal from the Lone Star State. Following up on the success of the Spring Chicken, Malekko went back to the drawing board and designed their own reverb pedal that is not based off the brick. What they came up with is the Malekko Chicklet. One of the new mini line of Malekko pedals, the Chicklet is a bantam box space saver with tone that is a lot bigger than its enclosure. The Malekko Chicklet features controls for Mix and Dwell to help you dial in the perfect amount of reverb for any situation. Ready to take over the world of affordable reverb pedals, the Malekko Chicklet may be small, but it definitely will never be overlooked.

Thanks to Joey O for the heads up on this little monster!

Gibson Acoustic's Randy Scruggs Advanced Jumbo

With a bevy of Grammies, three Country Music Award Musician of the Year titles, and production and songwriting credits to rival any of the most influential names in Nashville, Randy Scruggs’ resume practically reads like a history of contemporary country music itself. The son of legendary banjo virtuoso Earl Scruggs, Randy grew up amid Nashville’s elite, made his first professional guitar recording at the age of 13, and was a first-call session guitarist and producer before he had left his teen years behind. Put it all together, and Scruggs’ heart beats with the pulse of country music—much like that of his beloved Gibson Advanced Jumbo, long the go-to flat-top for Nashville pickers.

Ask The ToneFreq... Rocktron G300 Issue

QUESTION:

Hi,
I came across your post at about Rocktron's G300. I have one of these and the sound is incredible. However, this unit also create lots of hum on most of my presets, especially ones with clean channel. Even if these are factory preset.

I did email Rocktron but they seem dont have answer for this.

I wonder if you have any idea that can help me eliminate the hum noise (??)

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Tien

Tien,
The G300 is pretty cool. What guitar & pickups are you using? I found that using hi-gain settings with my Gibson '61 VOS SG caused a lot of feedback. I believe it was due to the historical Burstbuckers not being as shielded in comparison to Burstbucker Pros in my Gibson USA LP Std. Is your guitar equipped with single-coil pickups or P-90 style? If so that could be your problem.

Since most all of those presets have some type of EQ and amp simulator setting on them you should make sure that your G300 is set for going into the amp without the speaker emulation. Lastly you should also check out the HUSH noise gate setting and make sure that you are getting the type of response you need to get.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

ToneFreq's Daily Pedal: Snazzy FX Mini Ark

Don't let the name fool you. There is nothing tiny about the sound of this box.
The little brother to THE AUDIO ARK, The MINI-ARK is really in its own class of octave fx,guitar synths and tracking boxes.

With the capability to take your guitar input (although ANY source will produce cool results...try it on monophonic sources like vocals or synth, or for ultimate weirdness, on drum loops or submixes) track it, add an octave of your choosing below or above, an interval of your choosing above (or below) AND The capability to mix the two in any combination with the ORIGINAL signal OR a DIRTY version of the signal, you can create chords (and in chord preset mode, it can respond to chords), or thickened notes in thousands of combinations, all by changing the mix knobs and the position of the Interval and Octave selectors.

But thats just the beginning. Because in addition to the Octave and Interval sections, there is also an INFINITE HOLD section which allows you to stomp on a second switch and let the note go on and on and on and on.

While the sound is droning, there is an ADDITIONAL octave down effect that you can play on top of the continuous sound. Think of it this way, you could be playing a lead, the lead could be mimicked a 3rd above, and 3 octaves below, and get mixed with a distorted version of guitar. Then, you could step on the infinite switch, and start playing the distorted guitar AND an octave below ON TOP OF the holding 3rd above and 2 octaves below. Its really something you have to see in action.

Gibson's 50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TD

Iconic Model One of the Most Legendary Semi-Hollow Electric Guitars in the World

Nashville, TN…February 11, 2010…Gibson Guitar, the world’s premiere musical instrument manufacturer and leader in music technology, is proud to announce the highly anticipated arrival of the 50th Anniversary 1960 Gibson ES-335TD. Back in the late 1950s, Gibson was boldly pushing the envelope on electric guitar design. The effort resulted in several models that were just too far ahead of their time to sink in with players of the day—the Flying V and Explorer being cases in point — and were gone from the catalogue by 1960. The ES-335 however was an instant classic, embraced by blues, rock, country and jazz players the world over. By 1960, this model was hitting its stride though it was certainly a year of transition for the iconic model.

In the beginning of 1960, the ES-335TDs were built to the same specs as the 1959 versions and were offered in only Natural and Sunburst finishes. By about midyear, neck specs began to change to a thinner and more elliptical feel and ultimately, production of the Natural ES-335TD would cease and the Cherry finish would take its place in the latter part of the year. It is this later version that many argue the 1960 ES-335TD’s features had settled into their optimum form. With a fast new neck profile, striking new “insert” or “reflector” tone and volume knobs, the ES-335TD still retained early-spec details such as the dot fingerboard inlays, a double cutaway profile, full-length maple centerblock, and nickel-plated hardware that players have long seen as indicative of the model’s zenith.

All these and more are brought back to life in the Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TD, a reincarnation of one of the most legendary semi-hollow electric guitar of all time, handcrafted by Gibson Custom’s Memphis division to celebrate the model’s “golden anniversary”. For this celebration, Gibson Custom is offering the later 1960 “fast neck profile” version, the most unique of the year, and is available in three finishes Antique Vintage Sunburst, Antique Faded Cherry or Antique Natural, all aged in Gibson’s acclaimed VOS (Vintage Original Specs) process, and loaded with period-correct hardware including “insert” volume and tone knobs, double band tuners and a pair of accurate PAF-style 57 Classic humbucking pickups. The Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TD is equipped with pickups and electronics that accurately reflect the original units of the most desirable ES-335TDs ever made. A pair of ’57 Classic pickups capture that highly sought-after “PAF” style tone, noted for its unparalleled blend of warmth, richness and clarity, while quality CTS potentiometers with “bumblebee” tone caps and a Switchcraft selector and output jack translate the signal in pure vintage style

Additionally the neck features a holly head veneer, tortoise shell side dot material and has been completely re-tooled with accurate truss rod channel depth and profile based on scans by the Gibson Custom Shop Engineering Team. The Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TD is the closest today’s player can come to obtaining the look, feel and tone of an original dot-neck 1960 ES-335TD.

The original ES-335TD (“TD” for “thinline, double-pickup”) was a huge hit simply because it addressed so many different guitarists’ needs in one new design. The arched top and f-holes appealed to jazz and dance-band players who were still attached to the look of traditional Gibson “jazz boxes”, but who appreciated advancements such as a thinline, double-cutaway body. The maple center block that ran from neck tenon to end pin reduced feedback and provided the sharper, snappier tone that rock and roll and country players demanded, and also enabled the use of Gibson’s solid new Tune-o-matic bridge and stop-bar tailpiece pairing, which further aided tone and sustain. In one form or another the ES-335TD (and its siblings, the ES-345 and ES-355) would land in the hands of Eric Clapton, Alvin Lee, Chuck Berry, B.B. King, Larry Carlton, and countless other groundbreaking guitarists.

With its historically accurate tone woods, electronics, and hardware, the Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TD packs all the tonal versatility of the original, and proves once again why the design has remained a favorite of guitarists from every genre of music since its introduction half a century ago. All Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TDs come with a silkscreened Gibson Custom Shop hard-shell case, a Certificate of Authenticity and a full complement of “how to” literature.

ToneFreq's Daily Pedal: Voodoo Lab Pedal Power Iso 5, Pedal Power Cables & Ground Control Pro Updates

Today's Daily Pedal is about gear for your pedals! Enjoy!

Premier Guitar's Rebecca Dirks is On Location in Anaheim, CA, for the 2010 NAMM show where she visits the Voodoo Lab booth. In this segment, we get to see what's new at Voodoo Lab, including the Pedal Power Iso 5, Pedal Power Cables and Ground Control Pro Updates.

The Pedal Power Iso 5 is an isolated power supply for powering guitar pedal effects and accessories. It's the ultimate compact solution for smaller pedalboards, rack shelves, or even as an additional power supply for larger boards. With five isolated, filtered and regulated output sections, ISO-5 keeps even the most sensitive vintage and boutique analog pedals dead quiet.

Pedal Power ISO-5 includes a high-current output which will properly power modern digital power-hungry effects like those from Eventide, Line 6, and TC Electronic. There's also a dedicated 18V output for those pedals which need the higher voltage for extra headroom.

Pedal Power Cables come in various sizes and lengths and are broken down into two different categories - 2 & 2+ cables and AC cables.

The Ground Control Pro can work great with Digidesign's Eleven Rack and now has even more flexibility and control for the most anal of guitarists.

ToneFreq's Daily Pedal: Vox introduces V845 Classic Wah guitar pedal NAMM 2010

PRESS RELEASE: Vox Amplification is displaying the affordable V845 Wah Wah Pedal. Sonically, the V845 preserves the spirit and tone of the early VOX wah-wah pedals - a sound still sought after by today's players.

Designed to withstand the rigors of life on the road, the V845 features a solid yet lightweight die-cast aluminium housing, as found on authentic VOX wah pedals from the 1960s. Cosmetically, the V845 creates a vintage mood with its period-authentic black crepe finish and black-on-black pedal surface.

VOX developed the world's first wah-wah effect in the 1960s. From the earliest days of rock music, it met with acclaim from guitarists the world over with its famous "talking" tone. The unmistakable wah-wah sound has been heard on countless masterpiece recordings and legendary live performances.

The V845 Wah Pedal is now available with a retail price of $155.00.

ToneFreq's Daily Pedal: Way Huge's Aqua Puss Delay

The Aqua-Puss MkII is making its triumphant return, ready to bathe a tone thirsty world in gorgeously smooth delay. One twist of the Delay knob takes you from a tight 20ms delay to a cavernous 300ms. The Feedback control regulates delay duration and intensity. But watch out. Extreme settings can send the Aqua-Puss MkII into self-oscillating psycho-freak-out mode! Meanwhile the Blend knob lets you set a balance between dry and delayed signal from mild to wild. The Aqua-Puss MkII delivers all the spooky mystery of vintage analog delay and tape-based echo, with none of the hassle of creaky, ancient gear.
