ToneFreq's Daily Pedal: PolyTune by TC Electronic

I know I have made the PolyTune my daily pedal a few days ago, however TC has put up a new webvideo of this cool new pedal. I had to post it since it might just be my new favorite tuner! TC, if you're reading this please feel free to send me one for review!

Tuning used to be a necessary evil. The last barrier before you could get truly rocking. But now, tuning is ready to get blasted into the 21st century with PolyTuneTM, the stomp-box sized tuning miracle from TC Electronic!

PolyTuneTM is the world's first polyphonic tuner, and a game-changing total tuning turnaround that will have future guitarists wondering how we ever got by without it.

It couldn't be done - until we did it.
The magic lies in a never before seen approach to tuning aimed at speed, accuracy and ease of use. With PolyTuneTM, you simply strum all strings on your guitar or bass at once, and it will immediately tell you which strings need tuning! This cutting-edge tuning technology revolutionizes the way you tune and accomplishes what has been deemed 'impossible' until now: tuning all strings simultaneously! It really is as simple as strum - tune - rock, and this quantum leap forward allows you to get in tune fast, and back to doing what you love: playing.

ToneFreq's Daily Pedal: Z. Vex Inventobox

Ever want to build your own pedal, but weren't interested in the soldering, drilling, painting, and all of the assembly needed to make one from scratch?

The Z.Vex Effects Inventobox is a unique new product which allows you to quickly design, build and/or modify your own pedals without soldering! The Inventobox comes with two different channels so you can build either one or two different devices into the same box. All of the necessary components are included to make it easy for you... there's a variety of potentiometer values and switches all ready inside the box, quickly accessible through tiny sockets which accept standard experimenter socket wires or included cables. The unit is easily opened by hand to make fast modifications to the circuitry.

The unit consists of four basic components:

The enclosure with 4 permanently-mounted 100k potentiometers (rotary controls), two 3-position switches, 5 multi-colored LEDs, and two stomp switches with on/off LEDs.
Inside the dual enclosure is a window which contains connectors to access the input and output for channels 1 and 2, an LED work light to see the connectors more clearly, a 9VDC power connection, and various connectors for the multi-colored LEDs and potentiometers.
The lid for the upper part of the enclosure which contains 12 removable potentiometers (the order and values can easily be changed), 12 LEDs, and sockets which let you easily hook up wires from your pedal circuit to the various controls and LEDs.
The lid also has a removable brass shielded tray which contains an experimenter's socket where you build up your circuits.
Design features:

The Inventobox has several unique design features (patents pending) which make it easy to use as well as road-worthy when assembled. The brass tray provides electrostatic shielding between the bottom of the experimenter's socket and the potentiometers, eliminating cross-talk and noise issues. The removable brass tray on the upper enclosure's lid allows access to 12 removable potentiometers so you can easily set up the correct order for your pots, making the controls easy to remember. The design of the tray allows you to put a securing rubber band around the tray's edge to keep all potentiometer and LED wires in place. This makes the unit road-worthy. The security of the components and wiring is further enhanced by the use of one or more foam inserts which rest against the inside of the upper enclosure, holding vital components in place on the experimenter's socket. The lid locks in place on the two stomp switches for easy assembly when hooking up the cables to wire your circuit into the box. Just set the lid upside down on top of the stomp switches to lock it in place. Also, there are two stainless rods that hold the lid above the upper enclosure if you need to have it closer for easier wiring. Just slip the rods into the threaded screw holes in the enclosure, then hook the bent ends onto the lid.
Other design features include labels on the brass tray and potentiometers that describe connections and values, and a specially-designed circuit board that holds the pots in alignment when changing the order for your designs.

There are a number of different cables included with the Inventobox which provide a complete set of every type of wiring configuration you might need to connect your experimenter's socket to the inside of the lower enclosure. They come in two lengths, 100mm and 150mm, making it easy to reach the experimenter's socket on either the top or bottom. Here is a list of the types, along with descriptions of how they might be used:

A1 = 150 mm, 3 pos shielded wire, Red CCW, Clear middle, GND CW, qty = 1
A2 = 100 mm version of "A1", qty = 1
Used when the CW lug on the potentiometer needs to be shielded. Also use for 3-position switches.
B1 = 150 mm, 3 pos shielded wire, GND CCW, Clear middle, Red CW, qty =2
B2 = 100 mm version of "B1", qty = 2
Use for 100k potentiometers in the lower enclosure that need the CCW lug grounded (such as volume controls). Also use for 3-position switches.
C = 150 mm, 3 pos shielded wire, Red CCW, Clear middle, other side floating, qty = 1
Use for potentiometers or switches which only need two lugs, CCW and middle. Ground the shield at the experimenter's socket to eliminate noise. Also use for switches.
D = 150 mm, 3 pos shielded wire, Red CW, Clear middle, other side floating, qty = 1
Use for speed control potentiometers (tremolos, for example) and ground shield at experimenter's socket to eliminate noise. Also use for 3-position switches which only need 2 usable positions.
E1 = 150 mm, 2 pos shielded wire, qty = 2
E2 = 100 mm, 2 pos shielded wire, qty = 4
This two-pin plug connector is for LEDs or input/output for channels 1 and 2.
F = 150 mm, 3 pos unshielded, GND CCW, clear middle, Red CW, qty = 4
Use for potentiometers or 3-position switches that need no shielding, especially when you have a crowded experimenter's socket and space is at a premium inside your enclosure. The thin wires make it a lot easier to pack things inside the upper enclosure.
G = 150 mm, 2 pos unshielded wire qty = 4
Use for input/output wiring for channels 1 and/or 2 when shielding is not necessary, or for LEDs which don't need noise shielding.
H = 100 mm, 3 pos unshielded, GND CCW, clear middle, Red CW, qty = 4
Use for potentiometers or 3-position switches that need no shielding, especially when you have a crowded experimenter's socket and space is at a premium inside your enclosure. The thin wires make it a lot easier to pack things inside the upper enclosure. Similar to type F but shorter.
I = 100 mm, 2 pos unshielded wire, qty = 4
Use for input/output wiring for channels 1 and/or 2 when shielding is not necessary, or for LEDs which don't need noise shielding. Similar to G but shorter.
Modules:

Z.Vex Effects is presently introducing 3 modules so that you can easily build up famous Z.Vex circuits into your Inventobox. The first three will be the famous Super Hard-On, the Fuzz Factory, and a fully-buffered Tone Stack module that emulates the bass/mid/treble controls on a Marshall® amplifier. These modules plug into the experimenter's socket, eliminating the need to wire up most individual components. They're labeled with the connections you'll need to make to the pots. Adding a few jumpers to the board makes it easy to wire these circuits up in standard configuration, but if you want, you can adjust the values of different capacitors and resistors (and even the transistors on the Fuzz Factory) to suit your own tastes! Instructions for modifying the tone of your circuits are included with each module.
Assembling one module into the Inventobox can be done as quickly as 5 or 10 minutes! Changing the tone of the module to suit your personal tastes can be done in a matter of seconds. Using the stainless support rods, you can leave the lid floating above the enclosure and adjust the tone by quickly changing parts until you reach your ultimate sound!

The most amazing thing about modular construction for the Inventobox is that it's open-source! Anyone can design and build their own modules for the Inventobox. We hope to sell modules online by various designers which give you a really wide range of effect choices.

Here's a summary of the sockets and switches inside the window between the enclosures:

"Push LED" illuminates a pair of work LEDs inside the lower enclosure for a few seconds, allowing you to more easily see the connectors for plugging in your cables.
“<- 2 CIRCUITS 1 ->” is a slide switch which lets you disable the 2nd channel (if you are only building one circuit into your Inventobox) so you don't accidentally step on Channel 2 and have dead silence. This also allows you to use channel 2 as a tap-tempo switch instead of a true-bypass switch, if you are building a circuit that needs tap-tempo such as a tremolo or sequenced pedal. Slide to the right to disable Channel 2.
"SW1 IN" is the input jack for Channel 1. The left side is hot, the right side is ground. You'll always use this jack when you build a pedal into your Inventobox.
"SW1 OUT" is the output jack for Channel 1. Again, the left side is hot, the right side is ground.
"SW2 IN" is the input for Channel 2, if you're building two effects into the Inventobox.
"SW2 OUT" is the output for Channel 2.
When using Channel 2's stomp switch for tap tempo, connect this jack to the input of your tap tempo circuit, and bypass channel 2 using the circuit control switch (#2 above).
"TAP HI" jack is used to power up the tap tempo stomp switch. Connect +5VDC to the left lug and ground to the right lug for Z.Vex tap tempo effects.
"9VDC" jack is used to provide fused, filtered power to your circuit. If you exceed the Inventobox's maximum current rating by accidentally shorting the power to ground, the fuse LED will light on the lower enclosure and the 9VDC supply will be reduced to a safe voltage/current range. Disconnecting the 9VDC power and removing the short will cause the power to be restored.
"<-ON SW2 LED OFF->" switch allows you to turn off the Channel 2 stomp switch's on/off LED to reduce confusion about the function of that switch when it is not in use or when you are using it for tap tempo. Switch to the right to disable the LED.

NAMM 2010: Vox announces new AC Custom range

The Vox AC30 combo amp has been an icon for decades, known as the sound that powered the 1960s "British Invasion." Based on the classic AC30 design, the all-new Custom Series AC30C2 and AC30C2X offer numerous up-to-date enhancements, delivering the most versatile AC30 design in Vox history.

AC15C1: When less is more

First introduced in 1958, the AC15 combo has been the amp of choice for countless guitar players throughout the world. Drawing on more than 50 years of amp-building expertise, the AC15C1 Custom Series offers maximum tonal dexterity.

An evolution in tone

Vox Custom Series amps offer two channels: Normal and Top-Boost. Each channel is equipped with its own Volume control, and the Top Boost channel offers highly interactive Treble and Bass tone controls. This powerful channel pairing provides an abundance of tone-crafting control, letting you dial in a classic sound that is all your own.

Both channels rely on the Tone Cut and Volume controls in the Master section. The Tone Cut control operates in the power stage rather than the preamp stage, allowing an additional degree of tone-shaping.

The Master Volume control works in conjunction with the individual volumes of each channel to create just the right degree of gain-staging. By balancing the individual and Master volumes, the Custom Series can deliver everything from a clean Vox 'chimey' sound to a powerful overdriven tone.

Sound in motion

You can sweeten the sound of your Custom Series amplifier using the Vox Classic Tremolo effect. Both the speed and the depth are adjustable, allowing you to generate just the sound you want.

A warm Spring Reverb is also included on all Custom Series amps, adding spaciousness to the sound. The AC30C2 and AC30C2X also include an additional tone control in the Reverb section.

All Custom Series amps can use the VOX VFS2 footswitch, allowing you to turn the Reverb and Tremolo effects on and off as you continue to play. The AC30C2 and AC30C2X also provide an effects loop for incorporating your favourite effects into your sound. True Bypass switching takes the entire effect loop out of the circuit.

Power sharing

All Custom Series combo amps make use of three 12AX7 preamp tubes. The AC30C2 and the AC30C2X use four EL84 tubes to deliver 30 watts of power.

The AC30C2 uses two 12" Celestion G12M Greenback speakers. The AC30C2X uses two 12" Celestion Alnico Blues. A pair of EL84 tubes in the AC15C1 drives 15 watts of power through a single 12" Celestion G12M Greenback.

All models in the Custom Series offer a switchable 8/16 ohm jack for powering an external speaker cabinet when you need to speak with a little more authority; using this jack will mute the internal speakers.

Additionally, a second output jack – the extension speaker jack - allows you to run an extra 16 ohm cabinet along with the internal speakers for a fuller sound.

Carl Martin's Rock Bug

The Carl Martin Rock Bug is an Amp/Speaker Simulator and Headphone rehearsal unit that operates on a single 9v battery. Although this type of accessory is not new, we believe there is nothing on the market that feels as real or sounds as realistic as the Rock Bug! You simply get the feeling that you are playing through a good tube amp. Just plug your guitar (with or without pedals) into the unbalanced ¼” input, plug your favourite headphones into the unbalanced ¼” output and off you go! Adjust your instruments’ volume with the Guitar knob, select an open cabinet or closed cabinet simulation with the mini-toggle switch, and wail away through the privacy of your headphones. If you like, use the AUX stereo inputs and add an MP3, CD or DAT player to the mix; adjust the Master volume for your music, blend in your guitar sounds with the Guitar volume, and either play along with your favourite cd’s or add a personal touch to your pre-recorded backing tracks. Utilizing the balanced XLR output, you can connect your Rock Bug to a mixing console for recording, solo gigs accompanying the pre-recorded music with your live guitar, or as a DI for live performance when you are packing light, or your amp goes down. You might not think an Amp-Speaker Simulator is new, but with all these features, the Rock Bug is the little Danish-Swiss Army Knife that belongs in the pocket of every guitar-players gig-bag!

ToneFreq's Daily Pedal: Source Audio Introduces Soundblox® Pro Line Of Guitar Distortion Pedals at 2010 Winter NAMM

Source Audio, innovators of the award-winning Hot Hand® and Multiwave Distortion guitar effects products, are introducing the Soundblox Pro series at the 2010 Winter NAMM. The line brings a wide range of rack-mounted sounds and control features to a small floor pedal.

Both of the new Soundblox Pro distortion products offer their own extensive palate of distortions, plus a clean boost/EQ mode. Each distortion type is highly customizable via the extremely intuitive interface and 7-band graphic EQ. Six user presets, accessible via three footswitches, allow for the speedy recall of any custom tailored sound, and a traditional expression pedal input facilitates the seamless morphing from one user preset to another. Plus, each pedal is equipped with a MIDI input, allowing external access to presets and parameters.

For the sonic explorer, the Soundblox Pro Multiwave Distortion offers 23 distinctive and modern effect types. What makes the Multiwave unique is its use of multi-band processing, which offers a clear distortion with unprecedented note articulation. Sounds range from basic tones to aggressive synth-like, octave heavy, and extreme foldback effects that go far beyond traditional distortions. The pedal is used on tour by artists ranging from Chuck Garvey of moe. to Brad Whitford of Aerosmith to Reeve Gabrels.

For the vintage guitar tone enthusiast, the Soundblox Pro Classic Distortion features 4 tube amp and 8 fuzz box overdrive tones in the same powerful control format as the Pro Multiwave. The sounds are organic and enormously customizable via pre- and post-mid control drives and the EQ. Unlike other products, which attempt to digitally clone, model, or emulate vintage gear, the Pro Classic is the result of a five-year listening study and iterative algorithm design process involving over 40 classic pedals and extensive artist evaluation.
Both pedals are also available in the scaled down, non-programmable, standard Soundblox line. The two product lines are compatible with the Hot Hand Motion Controller, and feature state-of-the-art, 56-bit Digital Signal Processing (DSP) with 24-bit converters for crystal clear output.

MSRP for both the Soundblox Pro Classic and Multiwave Distortion is $299 (street: $219). The Soundblox Classic Distortion is $169 (street: $119). They are available now.
